CFAI Welcomes HSE Report on Services for PWCF

Philip Watt, CEO of the CFAI stated The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI) strongly welcomes the publication of the HSE report on Services for People with Cystic Fibrosis in Ireland. The report provides the blueprint for CF services in Ireland including the designation of specialised CF Centres around the country. The HSE Report was shaped by the Pollock Report which was commissioned and published by Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and published in 2005. The development of CF centres, the investment in the improvement in staffing of multi disciplinary teams in recent years and the forthcoming introduction of newborn screening for CF (2010) are particularly welcome features of this report. While recognising much has been achieved, we also recognise this report as a work in progress and look forward to an ongoing partnership with the HSE to continue to improve the quality of life for our members.

Dr Charlie Gallagher, Chair of the Medical and Scientific Council of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland said that he is pleased about the level of improvement in services in recent years, particularly in improved staffing levels, but challenges remain. The welcome fact that people with CF are living longer means that more adult CF services will be needed in future. We look forward to working with the HSE to fully implement this report and I take this opportunity to acknowledge the bravery of CF patients and their families in living with CF.
