Tax relief on Medical Expenses
We received the following information from David Fitzgerald (CF Parent) whom we would like to thank for his contribution.

Revenue Statement Re: Health Expenses For Incapacitated Children.
Under existing tax regulations, medical expenses can be claimed against income Tax at a taxpayer?s marginal rate. The claim is made after the end of each tax year, and is subject to disallowing the first ?100 in respect of an individual, and ?200 in respect of a group family claim. Allowable expenses are GP fees, prescription drugs, hospital fees etc (unless they have been subject to some other relief ? e.g. VHI claim, medical card, drug refund scheme). In the recent Revenue Commissioners Tax Briefing (issue 55/April 2004), further allowances are detailed which may be of interest to those with a long term illness e.g. CF
Phone: Where treated at home phone allowance of ?250
Overnight Accommodation: Payments made by parents for accommodation in hospital, B&B or hotels, where such accommodation is necessary for treatment of the child who is hospitalised.
Travel: The cost incurred in travelling (unlimited journeys) to and from any hospital in respect of the patient and accompanying parents/guardians where such trips are shown to be necessary for the treatment of the child. It a car is used mileage may be claimed at 35c per mile.
Hygiene Products & Special Clothing: The cost incurred up to a max of ?500 pa.
Note: All figures refer to tax year 2003. Parents/patients should keep careful records and receipts where appropriate.
If any of these allowances are of interest to you, please contact your local Revenue Commissioners.

Have you signed a consent form yet?
If you have NOT yet signed a Consent Form for the CF Registry of Ireland, and wish to do so, please contact the Registry Director, Linda Foley at 01 491 2722. You will be sent an Information Booklet and Consent Form for your hospital, together with a stamped envelope, addressed to the Registry. This form will then be sent to your hospital for signature by your Consultant. A copy of the signed form will be returned to you; a copy will be placed in your hospital chart, and a copy will be put on file at the Registry office. A demonstration of the Irish CF Registry was shown at the European CF Society meeting in Birmingham, using fictional names for patients, doctors, and hospitals. It was very well received and some countries who do not have registries expressed an interest in using the same database that we use. In three years we have already gained a considerable amount of knowledge about the scope of CF in Ireland and the treatments used. This compares favourably with other countries. If you have any questions about the Registry, visit the website, www.cfairegistry.org; or phone the Registry office at 01 491 2722.
