Statement from Cystic Fibrosis Ireland Regarding Beaumont Hospital
CF In-Patient Unit and Need for Government Clarity
Date of issue: Thursday, March 28 2019
Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) welcomes the decision by Dublin City Council this week to give full planning permission to the proposed new CF in-patient unit at Beaumont Hospital. However, CFI has still not been given a start or completion date for this unit by Government. Uncertainty about when funding will be granted, caused by the overrun in the cost of the National Children's Hospital, continues to create much anxiety in the CF community.
Philip Watt, Chief Executive Officer, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, said:
“We welcome the fact that there is now planning permission in place and detailed plans are available for the long-promised 20-room CF in-patient unit at Beaumont Hospital. We would now fully expect a swift Government statement that funding has been allocated to build this unit, along with a clear commencement and completion date. Anything less than such a statement will not be acceptable to the 160 CF patients attending the hospital. Cystic Fibrosis Ireland has committed to raise €1 million towards the cost of this €12 million unit, working closely with North Dublin charity, CF Hopesource. Any additional delays will only result in a further escalation of cost.
“The proposed three-storey unit will provide 20 in-patient rooms for 160 adults with CF attending Beaumont Hospital from North Dublin but also from much of North Leinster and Ulster. The design of the rooms is consistent with international standards with air filtration and are ensuite to prevent cross-infection between patients. Many adults with CF will need intensive in-patient treatment two or three times a year, and sometimes more. As CF patients become older, their condition becomes more complex. For example, 30 per cent of 30-year-olds will have CF-related diabetes. Anxiety and depression are double that of the general population, and CF kidney and liver disease is an increasing problem.
“With up to seven CF in-patient rooms at present, the lack of an adequate number of rooms delays care, and means that the current facilities are overused and no longer fit for purpose. Against the backdrop of a growing CF population with increasingly complex needs, the necessity for a state-of-the-art CF in-patient unit at Beaumont Hospital that meets the requirements of patients has never been more acute.”
