One in 1,000 – Women’s Mini Marathon

The 2017 VHI Women's Mini Marathon took place on Bank Holiday Monday, June 5th.

More than 600 ladies hit the ground running for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland in the 2017 VHI Women's Mini-Marathon. For most, there was a very personal reason for crossing the finish line  ̶  a mother, a father, a brother, a sister, a son, a daughter, a loved one, a friend. All with one thing in common - cystic fibrosis (CF). Ireland has the highest prevalence and some of the most severe types of CF in the world with more than 1,200 men, women and children living with CF in Ireland.

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland depends on voluntary fundraising and public donations to fund 95 per cent of its services, and the mini-marathon is one of its biggest annual fundraising endeavours. In taking part in today's event, these brave and determined ladies had just one goal in mind. It was to raise €100,000 for CF services, including support for dedicated CF staff in hospitals, patient support grants in areas such as transplant assessment and fertility treatment, and research.

One celebrity getting her running shoes on this year for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is campaign ambassador and TV3 Red Rock actress Róisín O'Donovan. For Róisín, taking part in the mini-marathon, and in particular to support the cystic fibrosis cause, is rather special:
"There is something unique about the atmosphere at the women's mini marathon, and being a part of the biggest all-women's event of its kind in the world. For me, what makes it so special is joining in a purple sea of women who are doing this not for themselves, not for personal achievement, but for others. For people with cystic fibrosis, life is tough enough. Taking part in the mini-marathon is one way of making life that little bit easier for them."

For Amanda Donohoe who is this year's San Francisco Rose at the Rose of Tralee Festival, taking part is personal:
"For those of us lucky enough to not have cystic fibrosis, participating in something like the mini-marathon brings home the daily reality for a lot of people with cystic fibrosis  ̶  the breathlessness, the wheezing, the gasping for air. So for one day, it's really wonderful to see so many people line up for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and showing their solidarity with people with cystic fibrosis across Ireland. My cousin lives every day of his life with cystic fibrosis and I see the challenges. I'm delighted to be able to show my support to him and to the wider CF community, and to hopefully raising lots of funds for much-needed cystic fibrosis services."

What is One in 1,000?
The One in 1,000 Campaign is the largest National Fundraising Event for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. The core idea behind the campaign is that One Person can make a difference. If one person could recruit 10 participants to join them in the Mini Marathon, and those 10 participants in turn recruited 10 more people = 100 participants. If those 100 then recruited 10 people = 1,000 people participating for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. The Campaign has been hugely successful with over €900,000 raised since it began in 2010. Help us make this €1 million in 2017!

However, One in 1,000 is much more than a fundraising event, it is a community event that brings together supporters of PWCF from across the country. As past participants will tell you, the atmosphere on the day is fantastic and with a great team surrounding you, you don’t feel the time or the kilometres go by. CFI provide the best of facilities for participants on the day including a cloakroom, refreshments and a base to come to before and after the 10km to soak up the atmosphere and celebrate your achievement.

Why be One in 1000?
The Mini Marathon is a great day out and a fantastic fundraising event. On the day, CFI provide a base for the day with a cloakroom, refreshments and entertainment. There is a great community spirit and we want you to be a part this.

Each individual participant matters and we fully appreciate every individual’s contribution as part of the larger 1 in 1000 team. Your support, participation and funds raised can help improve the quality of life for people with CF in Ireland.
