Exercise Grant Scheme

Exercise Grant Scheme

Round 2 of the 2019 Exercise Grant Scheme is now closed!

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland wish to inform members that Round 2 of the 2019 Exercise Grant Scheme has closed after just two days due to the budget being exhausted.

Background and Purpose of the Exercise Grant

In order to alleviate the financial burden on individuals and families with CF, and to encourage and facilitate PWCF to increase their physical fitness, CF Ireland initiated a pilot Exercise Grant Scheme in 2009.

The purpose of this scheme was to provide financial assistance to PWCF for gym membership fees, purchasing home exercise equipment, fitness lessons etc. Due to the positive feedback received from the pilot scheme and the growing scientific evidence supporting physical fitness for PWCFs,

CFI has continued to support this grant scheme and almost 1,300 grants have since been awarded to members.

"I do 20 minutes of exercise every morning on the bike. It helps me with my airway clearance and has definitely helped keep my lung function steady, even increasing my lung function."

How much funding is available?

The maximum value of this grant is €300 for PWCF over 16 years of age, and €250 for PWCF under 16 years of age.

How do I apply?

An Exercise Grant Application form and a receipt or official quotation (to show what it is you have bought, or what it is you intend to buy) must be sent to the CFI National Office by the stated deadline.

What is the deadline for applications?

Please note that grants are processed on a first come, first serve basis until the funds are exhausted and the round may close earlier. We would advise members to submit their applications early to avoid disappointment.

In 2019 both Rounds of the Exercise Grant Scheme closed early due to the budget being exhausted.

  • Round 1 opened on Monday, January 21st and closed one week later due to the budget being exhausted.
  • Round 2 opened on Monday, September 9th and closed on Tuesday, September 10th due to the budget being exhausted.

In 2018, the budget was also exhausted and the application deadline closed early.

  • Round 1 applications opened pm Monday, February 19th and closed on Tuesday, January 30th when the budget was exhausted.
  • The deadline for Round 2 applications was Friday, September 28th, but it closed a week early on Friday, September 21st when the budget was exhausted.

The number of grants awarded for each call will be limited, and will depend on available funding within the Association.

"Getting a grant for gym membership has really helped to motivate me to exercise more.  My lung function is better now than ever and I’ve even made new friends in the gym."

When will I find out if my application was successful?

We aim to issue successful applicants with the grant within 3 weeks of the opening date. Should you wish to find out whether you have been successful in securing the grant before this period, please call us in the National Office, but please allow 1-2 weeks for processing due to the volume of applications received.
