The Importance of Health Research

Why is Health Research Important?
Health research covers a broad spectrum of activities from basic biomedical research in the laboratory to clinical and patient-oriented research, population health sciences and health services research. Every diagnosis, intervention and new treatment carried out in our health service is based on research.

The recent decision of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to extend the cystic fibrosis (CF) drug “Orkambi” to children aged 6 to 11 years old, on the basis of clinical research emerging from two Phase III studies (NCT02514473 and NCT01897233), underscores the importance of clinical research and shows that today’s research really does become tomorrow’s healthcare

CF Ireland is committed to funding research to advance our knowledge and understanding of CF.

The ultimate aim of research is to find a cure for CF, but in the meantime it is imperative we support research that aims to improve current methods of treatment and management of the disease as well as enhance the quality of life of those living with the condition.

In order to increase our knowledge of CF and translate these discoveries and insights into vital new treatments and clinical care practices for those living with CF, funded research by dedicated scientists and clinicians from a wide range of disciplines is required.

Exploring Diet Quality in CF

This study aims to explore the normal dietary and food patterns of people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in Ireland and if diet is associated with symptoms (mainly gut related symptoms), overall health status and quality of life.

The study also wants to find people with CF’s experiences and views of nutrition and diet and if eating a healthy diet is important.
