New CF unit formally opened by Minister Harris

The new 2 floor CF unit in University Hospital Limerick was formally opened as part of the 6 storey Leben building on Friday 7th October.

The new 2 floor CF unit will provide an ambulatory day care floor and 9 ensuite CF inpatient rooms for the 120 adult CF patients attending University Hospital Limerick.

Huge thanks to the Tipperary, Limerick and Clare branches of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (TLC4CF) chaired by Owen Kirby; the Board of CFI chaired by Patricia Duffy-Barber; the wonderful contribution of the JP McManus Pro Am Foundation; the national lottery and of course the general public who funded this crucial project.

Many thanks to the Hospital management led by Colette Cowan and the HSE who supported this project including through the funding of additional staff. Many thanks to our two regional officers who so ably supported this project: Erin Sugrue and previously Katie Murphy.

The whole 6 storey Leben building will provide services for patients with CF; breast cancer; stroke; Parkinson's disease; dermatology at a total estimated cost of around €16 million. All the capital cost of this project came from charitable fundraising and is one of the most important examples of a partnership healthcare project in Ireland. The CF unit is the largest single part of this whole project.
