Housing - adult section

There are over 1,400 people with CF in Ireland, and by the end of 2024, 62% were adults (CFRI 2024). This is very welcome and comes with many years of collaboration and campaignig, and advancements in research and CF Care.  With these advacements and change in demographic, new challenges are also emerging, particularly around living independently with CF.

In 1998, 74% lived with parents; by 2017, this dropped to 43%, However, Housing is a major issue for adults with CF, with options limited to private rental, ownership, or local authority housing. Many are educated and employed, making them ineligible for social housing. Private rental poses difficulties, especially shared accommodation, which became riskier during COVID-19, forcing some to return home.

Independent living remains a key aspiration. Housing queries to CFI have surged and reflecting longer survival and changing needs. CFI hosted “A Place to Call Home,” a webinar addressing housing challenges and the mortgage journey. You can watch this webinar back below and you will also find resources below which you might find helpful. Please note, however, details may have changed in the time since recording.

Can I get a mortgage?

People with CF often ask: Can I get a mortgage? Can I get mortgage protection insurance?

  • Mortgage: Yes, you can.
  • Mortgage protection insurance: Usually no, due to CF.

Irish law requires mortgage protection insurance, but you can apply for a waiver by showing three written refusals from insurers. Banks aren’t obliged to accept this; approval depends on your overall financial situation.

What about Life insurance?

While mortgage protection is rarely granted, some insurers offer short-term life cover (3–10 years) at higher premiums.
