Youth Advocacy

Youth Advocacy text

One of the biggest lessons we learn as we grow up is to stand up for ourselves. This is called self-advocacy. You may also be willing to stand up for another person or group of people; this is called public advocacy.

Growing up with Cystic Fibrosis means advocacy takes place in different ways than you might think.

For example, you may advocate for yourself in the CF clinic. This could mean asking your own questions, taking charge of your own health, learning to track your medicine or physio, and speaking up during doctor visits. In school, you might advocate for yourself by explaining what CF is to your friends, how it affects you and what you need to do to keep healthy.

Public advocacy happens out in the world.

Many young people with CF become CF Ambassadors and share their stories on TV news shows like RTÉ’s news2day and Virgin Media News, or during 65 Roses Day. Others share their experiences at awareness days in school, in their community or where they see a need to educate others.

Your voice matters. There are many ways to advocate for yourself and others.

If you would like to know more about Advocacy, chat to your parent or caregiver and ask them to get in touch. We’d be happy to chat!
